Most people agree that dogs are the best pets to keep. These animals are loyal friends that can help a person do many things. I’ve met dog owners that use their dogs as running partners, security guards, hunting assistants, and even disability enablers.

Though being great companions, dogs are not good in grooming themselves. A dog might do fine hunting out in the woods, but he isn’t going to be able to go to the kitchen and make himself a snack. Buying a dog means responsibility: you have to keep your dog in good condition. Having said so, you shouldn’t be discouraged in getting a dog as they are worthy of your attention and time.

When you first buy a dog, dog flea treatment should be high on your list of purchases. Nobody wants to bring a dog home just to end up with fleas on their first day. Worm medicine and other vaccinations should also be given to the dog before you even bring him or her home with you. Healthy dogs live longer, have happier lives, and even cost less to own.

The next thing that you should consider is a leash and a fence in your yard area. Having both of these things is ideal, but obviously a big city apartment dweller isn’t going to have a fenced in yard to take advantage of. Dogs need exercise, fresh air, and a toilet to use. You can provide these to your humble canine with the help of the outdoors.

The leash you buy should be sturdy enough to hold your dog even if he decides to pull. You should be prepared at all times even if your dog has been trained to be obedient with you. It would be sad if your dog broke through his leash and ran out in front of a car.

The next thing that you need to take into account are food items for your dog. Though dogs like to eat garbage, you should try to prevent them from doing so. Specially made dog food will be much easier on a dog’s stomach and when you clean up their poop you’ll be grateful that it is.

Your dog will need something to eat his food from and drink his water from. It is ideal that you purchase two bowls: one for the water and the other for their solid food. The bowls should be large enough that you don’t have to fill them up every hour. However, make sure you clean the dog’s water at least once a day. You can expect dirt and dog hair to get in your dog’s water bowl so it is up to you to remove them.
