One of the earliest Terrier breeds, the Border Terrier originated in the Cheviot Hills area of Scotland and Northern England. These tough little dogs were bred specifically for chasing foxes from their dens, a task the excelled at due to their ability to squeeze through the narrowest of gaps. The breed was recognized by the Kennel Club (UK) in 1920, and by the AKC in 1930. Today, the Border Terrier is a mainly a family pet, but some still find work on farms controlling rodents and serving as watchdogs.

These sturdy little dogs have a harsh coat which can be a number of colors, including grizzle and tan, blue and tan, wheaten or red, with the ears and cheeks a darker color. The muzzle is long with widely-spaced eyes, and small folded ears.

In typical terrier fashion these dogs are brave and energetic, and seemingly oblivious to their small size. The Border Terrier is an excellent watchdog and will stand up to adversaries much larger than itself.

But the Border Terrier is not all aggro, and in fact makes an excellent pet. They are loving and playful little dogs with bags of character.
