Common Methods to Kill Irritating Fleas

June 29th, 2011

Fleas are a significant worry that every dog owner ultimately has to contend with. Anybody who has a dog has most likely gone through the difficult task of getting rid of fleas on dogs, a task which has usually proved to be more difficult than it looks.

Fleas aren’t simply a bother because they bother and bring about hours of aggravating itching for your pet, but they may also cause more serious problems which could include flea allergies, tapeworm infestations and anemia in acute situations.

Because of their surprising stamina, fleas are incredibly challenging to keep in check. A female flea can lay over 2,000 eggs during her lifecycle, which means that infections may strike briskly and the eggs she laid can exist for a long duration in the environment while just awaiting a timely target. Thus it is important to get rid of both the fleas on the dog in addition to the fleas residing in the dog’s living area. The best locations to look for fleas include carpeting, sand, bed linens and rugs.

The Best Ways to Eradicate Fleas

In order to effectively eradicate fleas on your pet and in his environment, it is fundamental to learn the flea’s life span. There are 4 phases which makeup the life span of the flea. Similar to nearly all insects, the fleas starts out in the egg phase, develops into larva, and then advances into the pupa phase prior to lastly reaching the adult phase.

The Flea Egg Phase

The eggs of the flea are whitish in color and are so minute that they’re difficult to recognize without the help of a magnifying glass. Even though the eggs are initially laid on the dog’s skin, a lot will in time fall off onto the ground to resume their trek to adulthood. About 50% of the entire flea count is made up of eggs. Dependant upon the environmental conditions, the eggs hatch in somewhere between 2 to 4 weeks. The higher the temperature and moisture in the surroundings, the sooner the eggs will hatch.

The Flea Larvae Phase

As soon as the flea egg hatches, it enters the larvae phase where it expands to approximately 1/4 inch in length. The flea larvae live on organic waste materials and on the feces of the adult flea. They are uncomfortable in strong lights and have a tendency to take cover deep within the present environment, preferably in a balmy and damp place. Climate controlled habitats are the perfect surroundings for the flea’s lifecycle to flourish. Outdoors, larvae gestation will only come about in damp, shaded locations.

The Flea Pupae Phase

Immediately upon moving into the pupa stage, the flea pupae stem a silken and gummy shielding layer. The layer rapidly forms a beneficial hiding place as it becomes sheltered by waste and dirt. If stimulated by temperature, carbon dioxide or by manual pressure, like that in a warm and moist environment, an adult flea might surface from the cocoon in as fast as five to ten days. When the adult flea comes out of the cocoon, it will survive for just a couple of days if it is not able to find a host. Pre-emerged adult fleas can live inside the cocoon for up to nine months. This is noteworthy since adult fleas still living within the cocoon are resilient to pesitcides applied to the environment and can appear a considerable time after you utilize insecticides in your home.

The Flea Adult Phase

After the adult flea surfaces from the shell, it will want to promptly locate a host because it has to have blood in order to live. Two days after finding a suitable host, the female flea will start laying about 40 eggs each day. Adult fleas usually survive as long as three weeks. The entire life cycle of the flea may possibly be completed in as little as two to four weeks, or as long as ten months depending upon the surrounding climatic conditions.

How to Treat A Dog For Fleas

There are numerous powders, shampoos, sprays and on the spot preparations available to free your dog of fleas. Be sure to confer with a vet to go for the most powerful and reliable flea products for your residence and pets.

How to Clear the Indoor Environment of Fleas

Most products are merely successful against the adult flea, but environmental insecticides are becoming more highly developed. A vet can give you with flea insecticides containing insect growth regulators which will help destroy the larvae and flea eggs. Before using any indoor insecticide, you should vacuum your rugs and carpeting to persuade the pre-adult fleas to emerge from their protective cocoon. Be sure to throw away the vacuum bag after using it. You ought to also launder all bedding your dog has lied on.

How to Clear the Outside Area of Fleas

Concentrate on dark, shaded spaces. Spray a product made from an insect growth regulator and repeat it every 14-21 days for 3 to 5 treatments.

The newer skin and oral flea preventatives will considerably benefit you in eliminating the flea troubles. With determination and patience, you and your pet will be rid of fleas in no time!
